I shopped around for a while looking for the best deal. This was a great deal with the extras I needed. I love having both lenses. I was able to get the whole package for the price of just the camera at local stores. I have taken some great pictures so far of my kids sports activities. We also took a lot of pictures at the zoo.

The only problem I had was that one of the bag clips broke after just a few days but I notified the company and they responded right away and sent out 2 extra clips to replace the broken one. Great customer service. I will buy from this company again when I need additional items for my camera.

I just bought this package and im really satisfied with all products. The camera is amazing, nice view and performance, the 3" LCD screen is so worth it!. Besides that, it is very handy and easy to use. In Manual creative mode, you can easily adjutst aberture speed and exposure. good quality for white balance pre determined modes. The flash works well, and even you may need and external light in some ocasions you can handle any moment and event without needing a pro equipment.

The price is really good for all items and for the camera itself. I strongly recommned it.

The Tamron 70 - 300 Tele - macro lens offers you more quality than expected (seeing at its price though). Works very well with the Canon EOS. The camera gets a little heavy with this feature but it is not a big problem if you have a good tripod. I recommend also to add the tripod on this package deal.

The IS for the 18 - 55 canon lens included makes the camera works in ideal conditions. nice photo quality for both lenses.

Even though my review is for an entry level DSLR photography, I think that as Im geting more experience in this kind of advanced photography, more i get satisfied with my Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

This is my first digital camera. I went from a 35mm to a digital SLR, which is a huge change. I purchased the kit, so it came with 2 lenses, an 8gb memory card, batteries, case, etc. - VERY good deal. I'm having so much fun taking pictures and "experimenting" with my new camera, however, I hardly know the first thing about using it. I'm just learning a lot by reading the manual and playing around with it, so, if anyone has any "tips", feel free to let me know. I was going back and forth between a Nikon vs Canon. One of the reasons I decided on the Canon was because of the "live view" option. I am a little disappointed, however, that when in the live view mode, you cannot look thru the eyepiece at the same time. Maybe this is normal? (I still love my camera, tho.)

I'm surprised on how much stuff I got for the amount of money I paid. The Camera was in great shape and received the whole package. VERY convenient for a busy person so I don't have to go to the store and buy each item needed separately.

Although, I have a few things that I am very disappointed about:

=The Digital Camera Cleaning kit: The lens cleaning fluid spilled and the cleaning kit box was soaking wet when I got it. Good thing it didn't spill all over the contents of the package.

-The tripod box has dents and cracks on it. It looked like someone used their nail and scratched it open...

-The tripod itself looks old and used. The roller that brings up the pole would lock up and looks like it is about to break. The pole is shaky and has stains on it. Overall, I am very disappointed about the tripod because it is very unstable.

In the end, I would say my purchase is worth it. Just a few minor problems that downgraded my views about the seller.

Great DSLR. I believe that you get more than you pay for with this camera. I did tons of research before making this purchase. A big deciding factor with this camera was the live view option that it has. I'm just starting out in the photography business, and this camera is perfect for me at this point. Battery life is fantastic. Clarity is exceptional. Camera isn't too heavy My only suggestion would be that if you buy a DSLR kit, purchase a seperate camera bag that is decent. The camera bag that came with this kit is already falling apart.

"Great Intro SLR" 2009-12-02

I switched from a point-and-shoot to this SLR about a year and a half ago and I couldn't be happier. I've gotten way into photography after buying this camera. I'll typically keep it at home if going somewhere where it will easily get spilled on or dropped (ie. bars, etc.), but for more events and photo ops it's wonderful. It does take a little getting used to it's size if you're moving from a point-and-shoot to an SLR for the first time, but it is well worth the switch! When I purchased the XSi, I was deciding between this one and a Nikon equivilant. After playing with both of them, I ended up going with the Canon - the buttons are placed better and the features you get for the value were better in my opinion. Can't go wrong!

I checked this camera out in the store first and found that the image was really bad when i tried to focus. I too had problems with auto focus and the picture quality in the view finder was bad and it was noisy when i tried to focus up close and it jumped around when i aimed it across the aisle. I did not like what I saw in the store and now that I read these reviews i know that it wan't just because it was a display camera. My picture quality is much nicer on my old camera which I shall keep since I have not had any problems with it which is a kodak. I am by no means an expert photographer, but I am not a amateur either somewhere intermediate i would like to think. So maybe someday I will upgrade my camera till then I will not be buying this camera.

"Bad Image Quality" 2009-11-22

For a long time I refrained from writing this review, believing that probably I was to blame for the subpar image quality (out of focus) pictures I was getting. But my conclusion is that it was not me. It was the camera.

I had such a great experience with the Canon S2IS that I was ready to move up to my first DSLR camera, and what better than the same brand. I enthusiastically ordered the Xsi with the supplied kit lens. I soon realized that no matter which focus setting I used, many pictures, both indoor and outdoor, were slightly out of focus, and slightly underexposed. I took side-by-side pictures together with my S2IS, and was shocked to see that the older, 5 MP camera took pictures much, much better than the Xsi.

I wrote to Canon customer service, and they blamed it on the "kit" lens. They suggested I buy a lens with a wider aperture (which was about $1,000, so I thought, "You're kidding"). I did not buy the lens, but I did buy an external flash ($350), and the image quality was just the same. I was so disgusted with the situation that I basically stopped using the camera, and continued using the old one instead.

After some time, I really gave up on the camera and decided to return it, together with the flash. Fortunately, Amazon has fantastic customer sevice, and everything worked out without a problem.

In conclusion, my camera definitely had focus problems. These focus problems caused the pictures to be improperly exposed, and the flash strength to be slightly inexact, all contributing to bad image quality. For me, my Xsi's 12 MP sensor and all its other features were worthless if the image quality was lower than that of my 5 MP camera. I am now hesitant to buy another Canon camera, afraid of a repeat of this.

One star for the camera, and five stars for Amazon's customer service.

I use my camera for taking pictures of our one year old mostly. It is a great camera for small children because it can take a picture so fast you don't miss out on a good smile. I am disappionted in the live view mode. It is very hard to use and you can not use it in the auto modes. They don't tell you that up front. If you want to take pictures mostly with your LCD screen in live mode this is not the camera for you. If you enjoy using the view finder this is a great camera for the price.

I purchased this camera for my fiancee because she has always liked taking pictures of flowers and plants. I read many reviews before I decided on this camera, and I must say that I think I made the right choice. The camera takes the best close up shots I've ever seen, even compared to other DSLRs that I've had experience with. For the first time user, the full auto mode is perfect to use until you get time to read the manual and understand how to use the more advanced functions. The biggest problems posted by other users seemed to be the noise the camera makes and the weight of the camera. I haven't noticed a problem with either. If you are thinking about trying out a DSLR for the first time, I strongly recommend this camera.

I bought this package for my wife as a gift and she is very pleased with it. We didn't have a tripod or any of the other accessories and this provided a very good introduction package. With an 8 gig card and the VR lens' you won't be disappointed with this if you are new to the SLR world. My wife took it to a friends wedding and the photographer joked that she was "competing" with his business. She has not put it down and has taken hundreds of pictures has found the dvd and book very helpful. I don't think you can go wrong with this kit.

I am a Canon snob ever since my first digital camera, which was a point and shoot Canon S30 3.2 MP I paid over $500.00 for. That S30 took better pictures (as far as quality) than my wife's Minolta 6 MP DSLR that I bought her years later. I must have bought at least 10 point and shoots and DSLRs for my family and work. All different brands. But every time I didn't buy a Canon I was upset with the purchase. There have been some good Nikons but none better than the Canons. My biggest disapointment was the Minolta DSLR I bought for my wife. Against my better judgement the guy at the camera store talked me into it.

There are more qualified sites and people on the internet that will give you great professional reviews of the camera and all it's features. Here is a few reasons I chose this one:

I was contemplating between the XS, XSi or TSi. I did a lot of research online before making my decision and in the end the price won out and I settled for a less megapixels and less $$$ (10.1 is plenty for what I needed). Like all Canon DSLRs this camera takes great photos and the kit lens that it comes with is a great lens for a DSLR in this price range. The body is on the small side and people with large hands may find it uncomfortable if they are taking pictures constently. But the small size also has the benefit of better portability.

Besides the picture quality, my favorite feature is that it comes with the software to control the camera and most of it's features right from your computer. I actually use this feature a lot, because I do product pictures and indoor still life with it. I can set all aspects of the shot, aperature, sharpness, shooting mode, white balance, etc, then control the shutter right from the computer. The picture loads right to my computer, I can examine the shot adjust the raw photo or make any adjustments necessary and retake the photo without relying on the small LCD screen on the camera. The liveshot helps even more because I can view the shot live as I am setting up before I take the picture. Other copmpanies charge more $$$ for this benefit. I like to use Raw format and make adjustments then convert it to a user friendly format. If your not familiar with the Raw format, it is worth your time to do some research and learn about it, your pictures will be much better.

I recently purchased the Rebel XS as a Christmas present for my wife and myself, and we both love it. We mostly use the auto modes. We are not advanced photographers. We mostly just take pictures of our baby daughter. But it has done great for that. We love that when you press the shutter button, it take the photo immediately, unlike with point'n'shoots. And when I want to have more manual control, it is easy. For a beginner, it is everything we need and more. Can't comment on more advanced use because we don't know enough to use more advanced features :)

Allow me to preface this review by saying that I love my little Rebel and would hate to part from it. It was great when I was just learning how to deal with a dSLR - easy to use, simple controls, intuitive (much more so than the Nikon I use occasionally)...all-around a great little guy.

However, for the really serious photographer, it leaves some things to be desired. The autofocus is slow, and faulty for dark places. The ISO goes only to 1600, and even then the noise is nearly unmanageable. 1600 is not that great either - I am lucky that I have a f/1.8 lens. There have been times where I have shot at f/1.8, 1/30, and still been underexposing by 2/3 of a stop. Thank goodness for the RAW format!

For what it is, the Rebel is great. Just don't expect it to be more.

Oh - and that 18-55 f/3.5-5.6? it is a good thing to skip. Get a 50mm f/1.8 instead, or a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5, or be like me and get an 85mm f/1.8. All better lenses, and the 50mm is even less expensive.

I received my Canon Digital Rebel XT in 1/08. Despite some minor complaints with the design of the camera, I enjoyed it for just over 12 months until it seemed the battery was quickly fizzling out and then suddenly stopped powering on all together. I thought it was a poor battery so I ordered 2 more, which had no effect. Canon tech support was compltely useless and bascially told me that the only option was to send it in. There are not local shops to fix these cameras because they are so intricate and specialized. So I went ahead and spent the money to send it in, which isn't cheap when you add the insurance factor. Now I just found out that it will cost $228 to get the thing fixed. That's a lot of money for something I owned for such a short period of time! However, I feel it has to be paid because of the amount of money I already invested in it and how much more it would cost just to buy a new camera. To add to my frustrations they never indicated what was wrong with the camera. All I was told was how much it would cost to fix it. Just like another reviewer asked, is it wrong to think that such an expensive piece of equipment should last longer than 13-14 months? Needless to say I have lost my faith in Canon and don't plan on buying another one of their cameras. Now that I go back and look at these camera reviews again I am seeing that other people had the same problem as me...what a disappointment.

FYI - Should this happen to you and you haven't sent your camera in yet, the written warranty is 12 months, but the Canon repair rep told us they will honor warranty repairs up to 14 months (they don't advertise that).

I know that these are no longer on the open market, so my review is simply to explain why I think these are an excellent value on the used market.

Bottom line is this - unless you are going to blow up your photos to poster sized, the 8MP XT is a great choice. The upgrades to later versions give you a larger display screen, sure, but the basic functionality doesn't change much for at least two generations. While I'd like to be able to preview the picture in the display (which you can't do on this model), the quality of photos as well as the excellent feature set (all laid out in other reviews) make this an excellent choice.

Combined with the incredible array of excellent lenses, the compact size, excellent battery life and great feature set make the Rebel XT a great choice on the used market.

the camera it's very good for the price, the lens it's mediocre but..again, for that price what do you want?

I purchased this camera at Target, it was the last one on the shelf. I got a great price but then I realized why. as I purchased the cf card (in another place since they were out) I noticed the infamous "Err CF" message: the pins were bent. But not only..I decided (shame on me for not returning it) to ship the camera to Canon, I thought it would be fixed for free and then it would be ok. I received the camera back and for a while it's been working fine. Then it started giving that message again, every now and then, to the point that it was hard to take pictures. I shipped the camera back to Canon and they wanted to charge me for the repair. They said the pins were bent. THEY WEREN'T!! There is a problem with the firmware/hardware in the card reading/writing process. Some cameras have it some don't. I wouldn't reccomend this camera.

I am happy with my purchase. It included everything I needed to get a nice (but basic) camera set-up going. All the items included are things you need. The bag has enough space for your camera with the lens & compartment space for an additional lens, lens caps, cables and the extra battery. So there's plenty of space. The bag is fairly big so if its portability and comfort you're after then you may need a smaller bag with less space. The included battery is not a Canon battery but it is a fully compatible spare which comes in handy in a day full of shooting when your Canon battery may run out of power. The 8GB card provides plenty of space. Using the "L" quality setting (the highest JPG setting) the card will approximately store 1600 pictures. It gives you plenty of room to shoot without worrying about running out of memory. 8GB is the right size as far as memory cards go. I'm glad they chose this size for it. The cables included are part of the Canon kit:USB cable and video out to see the photos on a TV (the camera does not shoot video). The lens is excellent and so is the camera. If you are only getting started with dSLRs you will be more than satisfied with it. As you add lenses, filters and flash kits you will have even more possibilities for your photo enthusiasm.

Whether you're a professional looking for a good secondary camera that's still compatible with your EF lenses, an experienced point-and-shooter that wants to enter the world of Digital SLRs, or are completely new to the game, this is an excellent package deal. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS (a.k.a. the EOS 1000D in Europe and Asia) is Canon's superb entry/mid-level DSLR, designed to replace the XTi. Unlike the very basic XTi, however, the XS includes a number of features found only on higher end Canon cameras, such as Live View (gimmicky but useful at times) and the DIGIC III image processing board.

The 8GB card that comes with the package allows you take full advantage of the RAW format, if you plan on doing heavy image editing and need super-high quality and high-res originals. The spare battery is also always a plus, and the card reader comes in handy too.

The only draw back is the gadget back. While useful, and a good thing to include, it isn't of the highest quality. The first time I buckled one of the two main front closures, the buckle broke. It still stays securely shut, with two small side buckles and one left up front, but it's not as tight as it was before.

Wait around and it might come up on sale again. I was able to pick it up for $479 ($499 after S&H) a few months back. Not sure if it's worth the price now, but if you can find it for anything less than $500, buy it immediately!

"Perfect for the price" 2009-11-17

This camera is fantastic for it's price range, and it can perform with much more expensive cameras in many instances with a small amount of know-how. When it comes to dslr cameras you can't go wrong with a canon. It's a pity though that this model has no hard drive, so it's not possible to take video clips...which would've been nice

A couple of years ago, I decided to step up from point and shoot cameras and looked into taking a photography class and getting a "real" camera. This is the camera I purchased. Absolutely adore it. I've taken more pictures in the past 2 years than I ever have.

The auto modes are fantastic (I realize this is an older model, one day perhaps I can upgrade), but even more important - it's easy to switch to manual as well. This is a great camera to learn on it and I've managed to take some really great photographs with it.

I'm no professional. I don't want to be a professional. I just like to tinker. This intro priced camera does all of that and more. I won't get into the technical side of it, enough Amazon reviewers have done that and you can certainly read the product description, but if you are looking to get into photography and need a starter camera, this is the one I would recommend.

If I had to do it all over again, I would probably choose to not get the kit lens and purchase one locally where I can play with it. I quickly replaced the kit lens with a Tamaron I fell in love with. But lenses are always such a personal thing to me.

I bought this camera about a year and a half ago, and have NEVER had any problems with it. I've taken thousands of photos, and so far, everything works perfectly. I'm amazed at the clarity of the pictures I've taken with it. I rarely get a bad shot.

I'm curious about the problems people have listed in their negative reviews. Based on my personal experience, and the experiences of many of my friends who own the same camera, I'd have to say user error on the part of any negative reviews on this product. I figure if you can't figure out how to use an XTI (or one of the newer models Canon has out now) then you might want to try out a lower quality camera such as a Nikon. Nikon produces lesser quality, substandard cameras that won't make you feel bad if they break. Canon cameras are more professional, higher quality products and shouldn't be just given to any child to play with. If you want to give a child a camera to play around with, ANY nikon will do. Leave Canon cameras to REAL PROFESSIONALS.

I highly recommend a Canon Digital Rebel XTI to anyone who is looking for a true professional camera.

"Good Package on "Last Years Model"" 2009-07-01

The Rebel XS is a quality entry level SLR,bearing the Canon reputation.As a package kit it is fairly priced given the 2 basic lenses included. The gadget bag is so-so...but adequate. To round out this kit I also bought 2 HOYA filters (a circular polarizer and a UV filter).

As another reviewer mentioned there are better Canon digital SLR's out there,and they are priced accordingly. I do believe however that this outfit from Cameta represents a fair-priced starter kit for those upgrading from point and shoot cameras.

If budget constraints require a compromise between the "good" and the "best" this is a good choice in mid-2009, in my opinion.

"Money Well Spent - Camera and all the extras" 2009-02-15

I wanted to wait until I used the Camera before writing the review. The main reason I bought this camera is as a "step up" from my point-and-shoot Panasonic that always performed well for me and I will continue to use for some photos, but I wanted to be able to use different lenses and also have access to the RAW photo format. RAW images can be worked over with Photoshop (which I haven't bought yet) and are very large files holding much more data about the image than the point-and-shoot jpeg photo image files. You cannot edit jpeg images (that I know of). I attended a seminar given by Rick Sammon, a professional photographer, and was in awe of the things he can do with an image (correct all colors so the sky is not washed out to nothing, for example- Google his web page or YouTube for photography instruction). I am working my way toward richly colored images, and away from the kind of pictures we all take on vacation where the skies are not as wonderful as we remembered, the trees are not as green, you know....

I mainly photograph outdoor scenes, landscapes, wildflowers, nature scenes and also people-story images. I wanted a camera with different lenses for wide angle landscapes and also a telephone lens for animal and people close ups (without being close up). The package I bought from Cameta Camera through Amazon came with an 18-55mm lens and also a 75-300 lens. The lenses just screw on and off. Now then, the GOODIE BAG that came with this package from Cameta included a really nice camera "gadget" bag that holds the camera, lenses, extra cords, batteries, and there is room to spare. The bag I got is well made (I read some reviews about a cheap bag, mine is wonderful). ALSO I GOT an 8 gig card to use in the camera, I can take photos till the cows come home and not run out of room, even in the RAW giant sized photo image file. ALSO I received two camera batteries with a recharger, so I will never run out of power in the middle of the day. I ALSO received a card reader which makes it very easy to remove the card from the camera, plug it in the reader and then directly into my computer USB port, I never even had to install any software on my MAC, just plug in and download the images. This is the kind of little stuff that really adds up after you have decided to buy a camera and sort of deflates your concept of getting a good deal. I recommend buying the "outfit" as it is more painless way to commit to your purchase, plus you will need this stuff anyway and save some $$.

The camera was ready to use out of the box - just insert card and battery and that's all. There is a dial with pre-set functions to take landscapes, macro, portrait shots, shutter priority or aperature priority, but if you want to you can also manually adjust whatever you want to, the ISO, etc. I am still learning about how to choose these options but am not shanghaied until I finish my education. I opened the box in the evening, put the battery in the camera, screwed on the telephoto lens and took a photo of a painting in the next room, pretty much in the dark, and was amazed that the focus was so clear, and the flash just right. Amazed. This is not something you can do with a point-and-shoot.

One thing I have noticed is that the focus you see in the view finder is ACCURATE. There are red lights showing the EXACT area the lens is focused on, and if you move the camera and therefore the focus, you might not get the shot you want. For instance, I was out in a duck blind with the telephoto lens on, the camera was set to take photos continuously, and I was capturing images of ducks coming in to land on the lake water. Since the ducks were moving, and I was following them with the camera the red dots in the viewfinder were not always squarely on the flying ducks, so I was not always focusing directly on the duck. If you are not taking images of moving things, no problem. Just a head's up, you need to be accurate with your pointing of the lens, the camera will do it's job as you instruct it. I took 535 images over a couple of hours and the card and battery were no where near capacity. Later I was taking photos of some little kids driving wildly around in the yard in a mule, they were larger and easier to get the focus dots pegged on, and they came out perfectly in focus.

All in all, this camera, lenses, and goodies package was money well spent for me. I would recommend shopping with Cameta? Camata? Camera through Amazon (they must have set up a "package deal" between themselves). Shipping was fast, everything received was as expected. If you want to go beyond the point-and-shoot type photo but are boggled with all the brands and choices like I was, and don't want to spend too much money on the wrong thing like I didn't want to, look for a package deal such as this one. Also, check out Rick Sammon, he is giving away a lot of info on his website on how to use this sort of entry level SLR camera to get the most out of the equipment. "Excellent DSLR, now a bargain" 2009-11-12

There are a significant number of technical reviews on this camera so I'll be brief. This is an excellent camera. Only upgrade that it lacks & I wish it had is in camera lens correction. The camera is very fast. It easily takes 6+ frames a second. Auto focus is very fast also, even in less than perfect light. You'll be able to use for virtually all sporting events. But it also has good depth & coloration for landscapes, portraits, etc. It does only have a 12 bit color processing system but color is very good. AND don't let the ONLY 10 megapixel issue throw you. Although 10mp may seem light compared to the newer models, I believe that is one of the reasons the camera is so good at processing light. The pixels are less compressed on the sensor and really seem to pick up light much better than some of the newer camera's. And you will find that the 10mp is more than you'll need even if you like to crop your photo's several times or blow them up large enough to frame & hang on the wall.

AND the biggest plus? This camera is a bargain right now. With the new 7D & 50D out, people are unloading this model very quickly. If you want a camera to use for several years, try this one & take the money you'll save and buy a couple of very good PRIME lens. You'll get amazing results out of even marginal camera's if you use good lens. And if you match up a couple of good lens (TRY USING PRIMES, not telephoto's! Save the telephoto's for sporting events, etc!) to this camera you'll be very, very happy with the results. Fyi, I would give this camera 4.5-4.75 stars if I could. I would give it 5 if it had in camera correction (for some lens aberrations) & a 14 bit color processor. Good shooting!

This camera was given to me as a gift nearly two years ago and I am still thrilled with it. It replaced a 350D and I have never looked back - the larger body size, picture quality, much improved controls and all around utility make this camera a winner. A friend of mine recently picked up a 50D and I don't have the heart to tell him that I think the 40D is a better deal.

This camera was a steal when it was selling at $1300 and the lower prices make this a no brainer. If you want a C sized format, do yourself a favor and get it.

I'm a professional photographer with my own studio and quite a few years of experience under my belt. I was looking for a third camera to have as backup/gruntuserfriendly/thirdangle. I use religiously my 5D's and the ever sturdy, ole' pal-o-mine, 20D (which I may never get rid of.) I wanted a camera that was worth it's value and easy to use. (I use this mostly for my 3rd hands that are just learning.#

I have been very impressed with the quality of photographs the 40D comes up with when doing outdoor photography. I honestly was quite surprised and cannot say enough good things about it. When it comes to indoor/low light though, #ie. no flash ceremonies), I have found it lacking. I wish it had been designed with more custom function options. Mirror lockup is a godsend.

I love canon and strongly recommend their cameras. I AM a canon girl. What's that saying? "Owning a nikon doesn't make you a photographer. It makes you a nikon owner."

The 40D is a great camera! Just don't expect it to blow you a way in low light.

I bought this 1+ year back . first one I bought had a image split issue . the photo is taken is broken into 2 images . so I returned to Amazon and they send me a new one . great Amazon customer service , but 2 nd one I have now is giving Error 99 ( this seems to be a common issue for Cannon , please search error 99 in the google for cannon). once you get this error it seems you cannot do anything . it seems camera is dead . so I just passed 1 year and camera is dead . I am really disappointed with Cannon.

it seems that Error 99 is common to all cannon EOS Camera's . not just for 40 D . it is for 10 , 20 , 30 and 50 D as well .

read following article . they all have this Error 99 . by reading web it seems cannon customer service also horrible . beware if you are going to buy cannon . my 1000's of hard earned money was wasted . stay away from cannon

There are also 8 an 16 GB versions of his kit, personaly I prefere this one. 4GB will let you take lots of pictures, extra 4GB cards are cheap and you will not be putting all the eggs on the same basket (SD will sometimes fail). The bag is also esential to Protect the camera and even though it certainly is a little over sized that will also provide you enough space to expand your kit with extra lenses and even an extra body if you are really looking foward to take fotografy seriously. (It is true, you might want to buy a smallest bag just to carry the body and one of the lenses if you know you will not be using all the other stuf).

the kit lens (18-55) is a great all ocation lens the IS sistem is great will help you a lot on handheld shoots.

70-300 lens is also great but, if you are taking fotography seriusly, you will eventually change it, to a better lens. It is great for people who start in telephotography but specially on it's 300mm it creates a little color distortion, not enough to have in count on normal-zice prints, but if you are willing to crop your pictures and make huge

copies you will notice it a little.

Finally, I think a pair of UV or Polarized fiters will be great. Those will protect your lences and will help you get better pics in the outside, I will recomend any one to buy a couple of those (58mm will fit both lenses) to protect the lenses from getting scratched.

I purchased this package with hopes of getting more quality pictures of my family and also to have fun with some nature shots. I bought this kit for my travel to Disney and Universal parks in Florida. I have used it for taking pictures of different activities of my kids. The kit proved to be very useful, person like me with photography skills slightly higher than amateur will enjoy this kit. I have few suggestions.

1. The bag is too large, probably more compact bag will be enough as to drug this bag around is cumbersome;

2. Changing lenses is also not very comfortable process. Instead of 70 - 300 lens it would have been better to have 18 - 200 lens, which is in the same price range.

"Upgrade to Canon EOS 50D Camera with EF 28-135mm Lens" 2009-11-21

I owned a Rebel XS and recently just upgraded to the 50D. I was about to only purchase the 28-135mm lens, but then I saw the lens is essentially half price if purchased with the 50D as a kit. I knew I would upgrade sooner or later, so I bought the kit and have not looked back. The extra features are worth every penny.

The 50D works and feels more advanced as it should, including the 28-135mm lens in comparison to the 18-55mm one. Both much sturdier, more sleek. The most notable differences are the jog wheel, which makes scrolling through pictures a breeze, and the 3.0" LCD = beautiful playback. I guess the only drawback is it's a bit heavier, but the trade-off is the added durability with more features packed within.

The learning curve was a cinch having used the XS. If you're looking to upgrade from a lower model, the 50D is the logical next step. I almost went with the slightly less T1i, but after reading around the web, several others made it clear the 50D would be worth the extra investment. I'd have to agree.

I just bought this camera this month. I had planned on buying the Rebel, but decided on the 50D because of the build quality. True, it's a bit heavy, but it feels more solid than the Rebel. I think that a heavy lens, like the 24-135mm would be better on a camera more solidly built. I didn't want a lens to outweigh the camera! The pictures, too, are fantastic. I can see a definite improvement over my small point and shoot camera. Since the 50D is so well built, I hope to use it for years before upgrading.

This is my first Canon SLR in a very long while, and was unsure of the move from Nikon, but decided to check it out. Overall this is a nice camera. Noise level is indeed more than Nikon, my old D90 did some beautiful shots at high ISO where the 50D strugles. I would not go any higher than ISO 800 or so with this camera. Thing is I never do, so this is fine for me, but might be a problem for some.

The button layout I would say could use some work. Nikon I would give a major advantage here as all there buttons are easy to get to and navigate, where the Canon I have to look and fumble around to find even the basic stuff. I admit allot of this has to do with me needing to needing to know the camera better and will improve over time, but the D90 I picked up in like 20 min of using. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Canon's is bad, but could use some more work is all.

The camera is fast and starts up almost before I know I want to turn it on. (almost)Though I do feel Canon do need to add more AF points the nine it has seems to do the job well, even when following moving objects it keeps right up with it without a hint of wanting to slow down. Just make sure your memory card can keep up with this camera when your shutter is on auto fire. Like some reviews have stated, I have noticed the tracking does tend to want to go to brighter areas in the frame. This has not been a big issue with me, but is something you might want to watch for.

Another thing I really like is the solid build. It feels like a tank and knowing that metal and weather seal will keep this running long after I should of stopped shooting and had put it away. Nothing on this camera feels weak.

I was worried about soft images, though it is not a problem for this camera. Yes, if your using lower price glass you may see some softness, but this is not the camera doing it. With the 28-135 lens I got some pretty sharp shots with it and think its a good basic Lens, Yes my Primes (I like my primes) do better, but did enjoy using the lens on this camera for simple walks when I only wanted one lens with me and nothing else. Also I have noticed that this camera has no image overlay or multiple exposure settings. These are common on Nikon cameras, even there cheaper models, and I find it upsetting that there not on this camera. Yes you can do these in photoshop, having CS4 this is not a problem, but I prefer to do things in camera and only use PS for minor tweaks and adjustments. Canon really needs to add these.

At the price right now I would have to say this camera is a steal and a better deal over the 7D which really does not add much. I might take a stronger look after a price drop or two but right now this is a much better deal and I think anyone looking for a good buy on a SLR built as strong and performs as fast and accurate would be happy with buying the 50D.

The quality of photos is great, with very quick autofocus, and using a zoom lens with the IS feature still gives very sharp images. There is a learning curve with all the features on the camera, and searching through the menu or book takes some time to learn, but using the features makes them easier to remember. Indoors and in flash situations, I haven't found a way to MAKE it take a picture even with the flash unit raised. Seems it wants to find its own focus rather than my manual focus, or something other, but this is the only irritating thing about the camera. For outdoor photography this isn't an issue, but indoors it is.

I just bought the camera and it's everything that I expected it to be. I didn't have any problem with filter fit for the Tamron lense like I had read. But I did have a problem with the camera case. It's a cheap piece of junk. The fasteners are made of very cheap plastic and one of them broke the 2nd time that I opened it. I had already planned on buying a new one before I ordered this kit because it had recieved bad reviews. And they were right. I have a camera case that is almost 15 years old with plastic closures and they are still in one piece. A much better quality of plastic was used for it.

I know that I will really enjoy this camera even though I've just started to play with it. The price was great and so was the service from Cameta.

I had researched this camera extensively before buying it, but was torn between the various packages available. This one includes the standard Canon lens (very nice), memory card, cleaning cloth, extra battery, battery charger, data cables, case, and Tamron telephoto/macro lens. I'm very pleased with the camera. The case is something you will probably want to replace because the closures are not secure and can't be made secure. There's a risk of the top opening and dumping your hardware. The Tamron lens is ok... very nice for the price... but don't consider it to be comparable to more expensive lenses. It does not have the image stabilizer and it has some issues accepting standard-size filters, like it is a half a millimeter off or something. Having said that, this lens is the reason I selected the package. It takes beautiful macro shots. You'll get nice telephoto shots too, but have that tripod handy.

The camera package was everything it claimed to be. I highly recommend it, but be aware the case is low-quality and the Tamron lens is great/better for some purposes, but not the same as the Canon telephoto lens that is out there.

"Best Full-Frame Camera: Don't drink Nikon Cool-Aid just yet" 2009-11-12

In real world and in the studio, I'm shocked at the image quality difference from my old 5D I bought 4 years ago. I'm kicking myself for not buying this earlier. Color fidelity, contrast, sharpness, color balance, focusing all better. I'm surprised that the extra resolution really did help. The large files have a lot of headroom for mistakes.

While most reviews for this type of item are rationalizing a large purchase, here it goes anyway. When I first purchased the camera, I had cold feet and was ready to return because of the price. But after 2 months, I would buy it again even if I broke it.

Alternatives are really overrated, especially on [...]. Nikon has a far more aggressive marketing team than in the past that exaggerates differences, so take what you read with a grain of salt. Lots of people are drinking Nikon Kool-Aid right now and defend them to the death. Overall Canon is a better SYSTEM, although I openly admit things I like better about Nikon: button layout, viewfinder, body design, built in infrared flash control, built in flash, and the 14-24mm lens. But other things: low resolution alternatives, poor third party support (pocketwizard and adobe raw), overprices lenses with no midprice alternatives, poor video or no video, etc. For instance, Canon makes a 17-40L for $[...] and a 16-35L for $[...]. A 70-200 4 IS or no IS, 70-200 2.8 IS or no IS. Nikon only makes the expensive versions, which is why I always see Nikon owners with cheap lenses or mid-prices Sigma Lenses. Canon owners almost always have Canon lenses. Anyway:

Pros:

-Outrageous RAW headroom for mistakes, far beyond the 5Dmk1. In outdoor portraits with strobes, I can still get a high quality images when the strobes don't fire and leave me with a -2ev shot. When making outrageous changes in Photoshop, files respond beautifully. RAW files are monstrous, however.

- Picture quality out of camera saves serious time in photoshop.

- The screen is finally useful in judging exposure. You can clearly see if the skin tones are over and under exposed, hotspots in a poor lighting setup, etc. You'll still see more detail in shadows on the computer, however.

- ISO sensitivity: one of the best today. I shot out of a car window at twilight in a spooky looking town and got amazing shots at 6400+. I shoot more for fun since I've had this camera.

-Great customization and cool menu controls.

-I laughed at video but am starting to use it regularly at weddings. Amazing quality of expensive video cameras. Tricky to learn with autofocus. Must use a tripod.

- Even more detail out of my lenses (except 100-400)

- Everything improved from old 5D

- Much better image quality than 1Ds Mkii and iii.

- Canon lenses a much better value than Nikon.

Cons

- MINUS ONE STAR - second position of power switch was broke when arrived, so I couldn't use any manual features. Had to order a new one.

-Pre-planned obsolescence; just look at the 7D with built in speedlight control, extra video switch, auto-focus system, pitch-leveler, 1.0 viewfilder, etc. The sensor on this thing is still WAY better, and I needed another camera body now. But, it has features such as video that are way ahead of the competition.

- File size is getting ludicrous, especially when you need to export to TIFF, but WORTH IT. Unlike 7D and others, however, that extra file size actually has way more detail. Other high MP cameras can't justify their file sizes. sRaw not much smaller.

-My 100-400mm L Canon lens cannot keep up with this high mp, full frame camera. Your worst glass will look REALLY BAD with this camera. Even sigma lenses look better. Looks much better on an APS-C.

-I still sometimes miss the focusing system on my old 20D. Maybe I'll buy a 7D for bird shooting. People really exaggerate the differences in focusing systems, but it honestly could use improvement.

-Viewfinder not as good as Nikon's or Canon 7D.

Super fun new camera! I have been using the Canon 5D Mark II for the past 2 weeks since using a Nikon D200 every day for the past few years.

I realize that the 5D is in a different class from the D200 but surprisingly the D200 compares pretty favorably.

Here are some pros and cons, some in comparisons to the D200 and others not:

Cons:

- 5D Mk 2 feels a lot slower than the D200, I did not think that the lower frame rate would be so noticeable.

- I need new lenses.

Pros:

- The 5D is amazing and has such great low noise at high ISOs that I can get printable shots in near darkness!

- I need new lenses... This is the main reason I switched to Canon; more fast prime lenses available.

- video! another compelling reason to switch...

Other than these, comparable class Nikons and Canons are essentially the same and both produce amazing quality files.

"Buy it for your lenses!" 2009-10-31

I took a break from system-cameras for a few years. My arsenal of lenses became temporary museum pieces while I wandered around with a point-and-shoot digital. While it gave great images, one thing it lacked was the flexibility of interchangeable lenses.

I got an urge to start using my lenses again so "went back to film" so I could use them on my film cameras. And that's when I remembered why I went to digital in the first place. The long story short is that film takes lots of time, costs lots of money, and these days, is not well supported if you want high-end processing, printing, etc.

So there I sat, staring at over 20 name-brand, high end lenses and no camera to use them on. In todays dollars that's a significant investment. Enter the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. There are a number of good mount-adapters that enable the use of vintage and not-so-vintage lenses on the camera. After a little research I was convinced it would work for me. So I ordered the camera (with kit lens), battery grip, extra battery, memory cards and the lens mount adapter.

All the packages arrived on the same day. It was like the best birthday I ever had. Within minutes I was shooting images with the kit lens (24~105), and testing the camera with every last one of my vintage lenses and the lens mount adapter. A couple wide-angle lenses with deep rear elements would not work, but a long list of lenses worked perfectly and very easily. With the lens mount adapter I purchased, I even get focus-assist!

I love the battery grip - it holds two batteries AND comes with a clip so you can use AA batteries in a pinch.

The kit lens is wonderful. It gives a great range of focal lengths - from a super-wide 24mm to a very useful short telephoto 105mm, with a continuous run in between.

The autofocus is almost silent - so much so that a Nikon user I handed it to said "the auto focus isn't working". Yes, it was...

Gadgets are great and photographers love to talk about them. But it's the pictures that really matter, right? And that's where this camera rules. I have put this camera to every test I can come up with - slow shutter speeds hand-held (image stabilization really helps); low light (the ISO range is so wide I can almost say that light isn't an issue anymore); colors (so natural and clean that the images will stun anyone who sees them); and for me, the ability to attach vintage lenses and get auto exposure and assisted focus - a huge money saver for people with high-end vintage lenses.

The full-frame image sensor means that all those 35mm lenses you have will still behave the way they did on your 35mm SLR.

I went from a film SLR to a few of the early point-and-shoot digitals to a 10D and now a 5D Mark II. In the early days I wasn't willing to buy high-end digitals due to the ridiculously fast pace of the technology progression. The 5D II finally sold me.

Generally speaking I am quite happy with the camera. It took some fiddling to get the picture quality I wanted. My 100-400mm F4 L works incredibly well and has no AF issues. My 28-105 (stock) F4 L was consistently soft on the AF but the fine focus adjustment CF fixed the issue. It was surprisingly easy to calibrate, just switch between live-mode focusing (which is very slow but perfect) and standard AF and adjust the fine focus until they match. I had go all the way to +12 on my 28-105. On a pixel-by-pixel basis there is still some slight softness looking at the raws, but it looks unavoidable considering how the RGB matrix works on a sensor, plus noise reduction (depending on the ISO one is shooting at), and it is unnoticeable on prints or reductions. Still, I can only give Canon 3 stars on the AF because while it is always perfect on zooms sometimes it is just too wonky at wider angles, and the camera's automatic AF point selection is a roll of the dice. Fortunately the AF point can be easily selected. Finally, I also noticed that the AF sometimes got in the way of shooting with the zoom or tele, where I would hit the shutter button on a fast-moving subject that was never-the-less still in focus, and the camera would decide not to take the picture. Possibly it was just the AF mode I was in, but it seemed a bit inconsistent.

The only way to go is to take full RAW photos and clean them up in post-production. Canon isn't known for good auto-white-balance but it's a minor inconvenience in post. The 14-bit ADC has wonderful dynamic range. I had no problem cleaning up wedding photos taken in horrid lighting conditions (beige walls, mix of fluorescents, flash).

I also purchased the wireless file transmitter (WFT-E4A). The WFT is incredibly convenient. No cables, no fuss... even if I'm not shooting in an area with internet access it's amazing how convenient it is to get it into the computer back home when I do get into range of a base station, or even once I get home.

Battery life is excellent compared to earlier models. I have no complaints on that front. Both lens are excellent. I upgraded my flash as well. The 580ExII flash is excellent, far better then the 4xx series I had on my 10D. Big CF cards with UDMA are expensive but mandatory. This is not a cheap camera even if you don't count the lens. The RAWs hit 30MB and you will be unhappy if you aren't using 16G UDMA CF cards. The camera has no problem taking 500+ full blown shots on one set.

Finally I am very impressed with the video capabilities. It took some messing around to get it figured out but I finally hit upon the '+' button to zoom the live-view, making manual focusing while shooting possible. Being able to adjust the exposure w/ the new camera firmware is wonderful, too! The quality is insane, I'll have to buy a faster computer to process it. It is not a camcorder so don't expect it to behave like one. It definitely works best when the subject is at a fixed focal point. Taking video with 100-400mm in stabilization mode 2 just blew me away.

One thing I would love to have on this camera is the ability to set a specific auto-ISO range (e.g. 100-800, 400-1200, 800-3200, etc) and then be able to fix both Av and Tv and have the camera only adjust the ISO and flash exposure. I'm a bit miffed that Canon hasn't done something like that yet. The current auto-ISO does not work very well in any mode other then Av. So that lack plus the AF issues cause me to drop the review to 4 stars even though I think the camera's only competition is the high-end Nikon (and Nikon has its own issues).

The Canon 5D Mark II really hits a new portion of the market- it's really a professional level DSLR at a price accessible to shutterbugs, photography enthusiasts, and independent filmmakers. The camera features an incredible Full Frame CMOS sensor that does very well in low light...this sensor is, in fact, larger than that of the Red One 4K Cinema camera, which costs approximately $17,000 (please note that I am not comparing these two cameras- they really do serve two VERY different purposes).

Canon really made a step in the right direction with this camera. It provides quality, functionality, ease of use, and the accessibility of professional level products to those with shallower pockets. This camera has been great for everything from candid family shots, to shooting great videos of trips to Europe, family gathers, etc.

While the still photos are incredible and the video rivals that of exponentially more expensive HD cameras, the only things keeping this camera from being much better with video is the processor and the write speed. I think we can, however, expect to see Canon focus on this in the near future. They do provide great user requested features in their firmware updates, which is more than can be said by most prosumer/professional electronics manafacturers.

I would absolutely recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a camera that does it all without having to cost more than the car they drive.

This is a very complete package, actually you don't need nothing more. The camera is outstanding, right now I'm in the middle of the user's manual and I keep discovering very cool features (more then I expected).

The other items included probably are the downside of the package, the bag's quality is no good, looks and feels cheap. It includes a Tamron lens (70 - 300) which is very cool but it doesn't have stabilizer, being a large telefoto is very difficult to take stable pictures for a beginner, now I realize why the price was so low instead of the package that has the Canon counterpart of this Tamron lens.

8GB card included is excellent and sufficient, extra battery excellent and the lens cleaning kit also. The other items included haven't use them yet. My computer already has a card reader and the card wallet I don't see any use for it.

Overall, best package I found cost - benefit.

Read T1i's manual, you'll find very cool stuff!!, the only bad point it that this camera shoots HD video at full 1080p resolution but only at 20 frames/sec. I don't find that useful but anyway, this is a still camera not a video camera.

I bought this camera two months ago. However, I've only had the chance to use it a couple of times. After no more than 100 shots, it is now broken. I cannot look through the view finder because it is blurry amd the camera will not take a picture. It looks like the sub mirror was faulty. the peice has become dislodged and jangles around inside the camera. From what I've read online, this sometimes happens to this camera after estimated hundred of thousands of shots. But after less than 100? This is ridiculous. I called Canon and they will fix, but I have to pay postage and insurance in order to mail it in to one of their service centers. Hopefully, I can get get this matter resolved as easily as possible, but I don't think I will ever by another Canon camera. First impressions go a long way and my first impression of a Canon camera cannot be worse. Good customer phone service at Canon though. They were very helpful with information. However, that cannot erase the bad taste in my mouth knowing that I will not have this camera operational in time for my wife's weeding shower.

I thought this was a great setup for someone that is getting into digital SLR, but I really don't have anything to compare it too because I am a Rookie. I am still trying to figure out all the buttons but that is part of the fun. I got some great action shots of my granddaughter playing soccer.

I did get a different bag because the one that came with kit was bigger than what I wanted to mess with especially for carrying on an airplane. The bag that came with the camera is good and has lots of room for everything that came the kit and I bet you could get a couple of more lens in there and still have room for a big bag of M&Ms.

I also went right out and bought a 28-200 zoom mostly because I wanted too. I believe this was the cheaper variety but it was kind of cool to fool with and I am having a great time learning to make it work.

I wish I could explain how good the manuals that came with camera are but I don't read instructions because I am a guy. I know for a fact that the manuals do have pictures.

It must be a great camera because I have pictures that will be great memories so it must be easy to use

This camera is hands down way better than my smaller Canon Powershot. You would expect that right--outstanding photo quality, though big files. I found it easy to use and can use my zoom lens from my Canon film SLR from 1987. I'm very pleased with it. The built-in flash is good in a pinch, but invest in the bigger Canon flash for better results, if your serious about photography. I can take the raw files into Photoshop and/or Lightroom and easily manipulate. I love that the XSi will shoot JPEG and RAW at the same time. You just have to remember to change all all the settings and modes as needed.

I am using this camera for last 1 year. Got it for final price 485 camera 18 55 mm lens + 15 sandisk 4 GB card = 500. It was a great deal for me at that time. Technical things are already mentioned.just need a tripod and remote. If u r thinking for D40 or D40X ...then will suggest u to byt D60.. go for 10 MP and its continous shooting mode(its really works great for low light)

I really enjoy using this camera. The Active D Lighting is an awesome feature of the D60. I have just recently discovered the world of SLR's and don't have too much photography experience, but I used this camera when I traveled to Alaska and Japan and was happy with the picture quality. The camera went everywhere with me and had its fair share of bumps scrapes, so it is durable. I didn't mind carrying the D60 around because it is more compact than the D90 and full frames, but at the sacrifice of a smaller LCD screen (among other cool features).

The stock 18-55 VR Nikkor lens that comes with the camera is a decent all-around lens; very versatile for many situations. However, with many DX lenses available for the D60, you'll soon be shopping for better lenses.

Really happy with this camera, although after seeing my friend's D90, I want to upgrade soon. A great buy for a beginner to intermediate photographer.

This is a wonderful camera. I've had it for almost a year now and have used it from New Orleans to San Francisco. The stock lens is a great lens to start out with and takes wonderful pictures. Compared the the 80 or higher it has fewer options when concerning quality of the pictures taken. This is a great camera to start with and with the right lenses a great one to even build on. I highly recommend this camera to those that wish to begin photography and like to catch those moments that are often missed by digital cameras.

This is an excellent camera, all of the features described work perfectly. Some features that I particularly enjoy are the ability to create different image folders on the camera, and switch between them; the stop motion movie creator, which forms up to 100 images into a .AVI video file; and the fact that Nikon non-electronic film lenses fit on the mount and are completely usable in Manual mode. I truly love this camera, and it works great, just I would maybe consider other options as well. The D40 is the cheaper alternative, and you don't lose much by opting for it. The D90 is quite a bit more expensive, but offers HD video and live viewing. The D3000 is a slight upgrade from the D60 and a bit less expensive from what I have seen. I would consider all of these choices before purchasing. I complain a bit about size and portability, as I would not want to have this around my neck for an entire day of sightseeing, but that is what point-and-shoots are made for, ease and portability. dSLR cameras are made for being fully manipulative digital cameras that have excellent quality and have the ability to change lenses, ISO, focusing methods, aperture, white balance, and shutter speed to the user's desire.

Before I made an online purchase, I searched numerous amounts of websites. I checked prices, qualities, and many other variables. I'm not a very skilled nor professional photographer. And, I ended up purchasing this NikonD60. Trust me, it's not a knock-off, it's more of a show-off. When I got it in the mail, it was a lot lighter than I had imagined it to be. It only took about two hours to be fully charged and I got used to it the moment I started messing around with it. The cons are that it sometimes doesn't focus where you want it to, and, if your a TRUE beginner, it will be confusing. But, with some online help and sources, what possibly can't be done? It's an amazing camera. When you actually upload it onto your computer or notebook, it looks even better. Great quality!

"Best camera for the money." 2009-11-19

Overall, a very well designed and manufactured precision photographic instrument that meets the needs of advanced amateurs and semi-pros (maybe even a great backup for pros.) You can't beat the new autofocus settings, speed, low-light capabilities, 3" high quality LCD, 100% viewfinder w/ all your essential info available at this mid-range pricepoint. After several long days of testing, I am quite satisfied with my decision. Canon has shown again that they can introduce a high quality cutting edge product at an "affordable" price that Nikon and the rest can't match currently. Best value for the money. Add a few L lenses and you'll be set for pretty much the next 5 years or more. On the downside, it is not full frame (you'll have to pay a lot for that), the camera strap is so-so, and the camera is hefty - easy to hold for most of the day due to great hand ergonomic design, but probably not something you'll shoot with one hand for more than a few minutes at a time.

This camera looks great on paper, but....

The good news: the 7D packs lots of pro features you'll love, like a big and bright viewfinder and LCD screen, weather seals, a dampened mirror box so that the noise from the slap doesn't startle wildlife, automatic sensor cleaning on startup and shut down, micro adjustment for optimizing the performance of lenses, minimal shutter lag and fast AF. I bought my 7D with the incomparable Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS and the combined responsiveness is amazing.

The bad news: my sample constantly over exposes and blows highlights when used outdoors in bright light, the auto white balance is the least reliable of any digital camera that I have ever used (sometimes the color rendition is downright odd#, and images above ISO 800 are dotted with little white speckles that standard noise reduction software settings don't eliminate. My 7D delivers such inconsistent image quality that shooting in the RAW file format is essential. To top it off, the 18MP sensor creates large, memory intensive files, but delivers only slightly more visible resolution than the 12MP sensors of my Nikon D90 & D700. If you are camera shopping because you want to boost detail and overall IQ beyond the output of your Canon T1i or Nikon D90, you might get better results by spending $1700 on a high-grade lens instead of this camera.

There are also some design glitches that may or may not matter to you: mirror-lockup is buried in a custom menu folder, the IR remote shutter release can only be used with a delay which makes it useless for wildlife and portraiture, the tiny buttons around the shutter release button are difficult to use when you are in a hurry or are wearing gloves, the toggle control is temperamental and will frequently dump you into the wrong menu folder, and the focus controls are needlessly complicated. A camera that is being marketed for shooting sports should make it easy to change settings and operate quickly, buy I frequently find that I have to stop and fiddle with both hands in order to make a simple adjustment. Furthermore, it is not possible to set a ceiling when using auto ISO, and Highlight Tone Priority helps to reduce blown highlights but changes the base ISO from 100 to 200, so noise also increases.

In order to produce usable results in direct sun, I have settled on -2/3rds EV as a standard setting with Highlight Tone Priority enabled and contrast at the default (zero) point. Whenever possible I stop down and always use a super multi-coated polarizer on the lens. I also turned off the automatic LCD brightness feature, which made it impossible to correctly judge exposures by checking images in playback.

Editing outdoor shots taken with the 7D almost always involves a levels adjustment to reclaim highlight detail: Adobe Elements and Photoshop do a much better job of this than the supplied Canon Digital Photo Professional software. BTW, the default Adobe settings produce brighter, more saturated colors than Canon's software (see page 14 of the 7D write up at [...] for a demonstration of the differences). Whether or not this is preferable is a matter of taste, but it is something to watch out for if you are switching from Adobe Camera RAW to DPP. Also, I had consistently poor quality output from DPP RAW conversion: fine detail was obliterated and images were overlaid with a sprinkling of pixel-size artifacts. Open the same file in Adobe Camera RAW and you will see all of the detail and micro contrast that the 18MP sensor can deliver.

Is the 7D worth the price tag and considerable heft? Only if you need the rich feature set, shooting speed and durable build, and want to be able to use outstanding Canon lenses like the 70-200mm f/4L IS on a small sensor, cropped view dSLR. Canon should be able to improve the 7D's IQ with firmware updates. Until then, the bottom line is this: you can produce great images with this camera, but expect to do a lot of extra exposure bracketing and post processing.

Everything has been said about this camera. I bought the 50d when it first came out and thought it was a winner. But when the 5d hit the street I was sad at the features that could have been in the 50d. So I upgraded to the 7d when it hit. What a upgrade. You can't really compare the 2 cameras directly because they aim at different photographers. But the 7d was what I was hoping for in the 50d and now I have it. It was worth it!!. Read the other reviews then you'll know. I kept the 50d because it serves as a portrait and backup camera with wide lenses.

I don't usually post reviews but given the two one star ratings, I was compelled to do so.

I've had my 7D for about a week; only found time for a few, non-rigorous test shots. Preliminary results:

I prefer the new button arrangement and system of menus to those of my 40D.

Auto-focus seems faster and more accurate than that of my 40D.

Auto white-balance under incandescent light seems better (less "warm") than that of my 40D.

With a stopped down lens, the detail available from the 18 megapixel images ... makes me SMILE/LAUGH.

On a per-pixel basis, noise appears similar to that of my 40D - BUT, it's spread across 18 megapixels, not 10. And, to quote Neil Diamond, "It's a beautiful noise" - very random in character. In my humble opinion, for any given picture size, I've gained about half a stop in low ISO performance and about a stop at high ISOs (1600 plus).

I love the 7D and the features that it has. I use a 1D MKIII that I have just received back from Canon after the third repair for Autofocus - fixed this time. I purchased the 7D not as a backup but to replace my 1D MKIII due to the Autofocus issues I was having - I would go to the MK IV later if everything was kosher with it, but now that my 1D MKIII was fixed to my satisfaction I will keep it. But back to the 7D. Love the Camera, great LCD, great speed, AI servo autofocus is spot on, flash control from the pop up flash, cheap wireless remote can be used, great pictures. The 1D does not have a great LCD, no flash control from the camera itself, and a dedicated expensive wireless remote is needed, Better speed and better pictures from the 1D MK III though.

I am sending my 7D back, for just couple of reasons that are biggies for me.

1. File size is tremendous - my computer struggles under the weight of these files. Just too slow for me and having to store these files is a burden. If the picture quality were better it might be a consideration. But the 1D MKIII takes sharper, cleaner pictures at 10mp compared to 18mp. With the 7D you have to purchase large memory cards and only have space for 1 on the camera. The 1D MKIII has 2 slots and can store thousands of 10mp pics, big advantage for me.

2. I find myself tilting the 7D during sports shots, not all shots but too many for me. I guess it is the size, I never do this with the 1D MKIII.

Again I love the 7D - if I didnt take 1200 shots every game I shoot - file size probably wouldnt matter - but for what I do - it is a biggie.

The prices for 1D MKIII's are falling due to the MKIV being released and if you can get a good one, this is your best bet if you do sports or wildlife - just great pictures, great controls, great speed. No movies, Bad LCD and proprietary flash and wireless controls. The 1D MKIII is a workhorse and just plain works - very well. ( Very large - but comfortable )

I give the 7D a 4 star due to the file size, In my opinion canon should have used a 10-12 megapixel sensor. Also, I saw some softness and noise in my pics that I was not accustomed to. Great overall though.

Noise level is indeed more than Nikon, my old D90 did some beautiful shots at high ISO where the 50D strugles. I would not go any higher than ISO 800 or so with this camera. Thing is I never do, so this is fine for me, but might be a problem for some.

The button layout I would say could use some work. Nikon I would give a major advantage here as all there buttons are easy to get to and navigate, where the Canon I have to look and fumble around to find even the basic stuff. I admit allot of this has to do with me needing to needing to know the camera better and will improve over time, but the D90 I picked up in like 20 min of using. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Canon's is bad, but could use some more work is all.

The camera is fast and starts up almost before I know I want to turn it on. (almost)Though I do feel Canon do need to add more AF points the nine it has seems to do the job well, even when following moving objects it keeps right up with it without a hint of wanting to slow down. Just make sure your memory card can keep up with this camera.

Another thing I really like is the solid build. It feels like a tank and knowing that metal and weather seal will keep this running long after I should of stopped shooting and had put it away. Nothing on this camera feels weak.

I was worried about soft images, though it is not a problem for this camera. Yes, if your using lower price glass you may see some softness, but this is not the camera doing it. With the 28-135 lens I got some pretty sharp shots with it and think its a good basic Lens, Yes my Primes (I like my primes) do better, but did enjoy using the lens on this camera for simple walks when I only wanted one lens with me and nothing else. Also I have noticed that this camera has no image overlay or multiple exposure settings. These are common on Nikon cameras, even there cheaper models, and I find it upsetting that there not on this camera. Yes you can do these in photoshop, having CS4 this is not a problem, but I prefer to do things in camera and only use PS for minor tweaks and adjustments. Canon really needs to add these.

At the price right now I would have to say this camera is a steal and a better deal over the 7D which really does not add much. I might take a stronger look after a price drop or two but right now this is a much better deal and I think anyone looking for a good buy on a SLR built as strong and performs as fast and accurate would be happy with buying with the 50D.

We did a Wedding with our new camera and the results are fantastic. Photographers who have been around alot longer may want a little more expensive camera, but I challenge any photographer to put my photos up to theirs and tell the difference. (almost)Though I do feel Canon do need to add more AF points the nine it has seems to do the job well, even when following moving objects it keeps right up with it without a hint of wanting to slow down. Just make sure your memory card can keep up with this camera.

Another thing I really like is the solid build. It feels like a tank and knowing that metal and weather seal will keep this running long after I should of stopped shooting and had put it away. Nothing on this camera feels weak.

I was worried about soft images, though it is not a problem for this camera. Yes, if your using lower price glass you may see some softness, but this is not the camera doing it. With the 28-135 lens I got some pretty sharp shots with it and think its a good basic Lens, Yes my Primes (I like my primes) do better, but did enjoy using the lens on this camera for simple walks when I only wanted one lens with me and nothing else. Also I have noticed that this camera has no image overlay or multiple exposure settings. These are common on Nikon cameras, even there cheaper models, and I find it upsetting that there not on this camera. Yes you can do these in photoshop, having CS4 this is not a problem, but I prefer to do things in camera and only use PS for minor tweaks and adjustments. Canon really needs to add these.

At the price right now I would have to say this camera is a steal and a better deal over the 7D which really does not add much. I might take a stronger look after a price drop or two but right now this is a much better deal and I think anyone looking for a good buy on a SLR built as strong and performs as fast and accurate would be happy with buying with the 50D.

He usado diferentes cámaras Canon Rebel, desde las analógicas, y con esta creo alcanzar un óptimo nivel al tener video de video Full HD y fotografías de 15 Mega pixeles.

El uso de los botones de la cámara fotográfica son adecuados una vez que se acostumbra al uso de estos. Las opción de grabar vídeos se olvida algas veces, pues es muy raro comprender que se tiene una grabadora de vídeos de Full Alta Definición.

Canon demuestra algo de debilidad en la opción de video, pues el botón de grabado no es fácil de usar y no sobresale suficiente para tener un mejor control. El botón de ajuste de imagen tampoco es fácil de usar para ajustar las tomas.

Las imágenes fotográficas y de video son óptimas y se puede considerar que uno se siente un semiprofesional al usarla con los accesorios necesarios (trípodes, lens hood, Uv filter, zoom lens, etc.)

This DSLr is by far the best one i have owned....Easy to use and and compact...I love shoot with the Potrait lens ...Got a telephoto too which is awesome...I love that it has hd video...but it takes up a lot on my sd card. So prefer just the camera.

I've had this camera for just over a month now and have been taking photos like a madman. This is a testament to its ease of use and intuitive features. I can't wait to get more acquainted with the "live view" and "video" functions since both were reasons for choosing this particular model. Here's a tip: add a battery grip to give the camera more substance and consider finding a better flash for serious photography. I got in on a great rebate deal that included this camera, a zoom lens, and a printer. So I feel like this is an amazing camera for the money I spent! This is a significant upgrade from my point-and-shoot, and I am very pleased. I had done my research, so this was not an impulse buy.

Straight out of the box, with a little help from the manual and a "for Dummies" book, I got some great shots! The shots may be beginners luck, but this camera's menus and setting are pretty easy to navigate, so as I uncover more about apertures and focal lenghts, it will hopefully get easier to keep getting the shots.

The video feature is great, but not necessary. It didn't sell me on the camera, but is a nice bonus. I only take little clips to post online for friends and family, so for that it is perfect.
